Chapter Sixteen

Desire is an intoxicant that impairs your judgment. I know this to be true, from first-hand experience.

A ruthless competition will end badly for someone. There has to be a loser.

Sometimes it even ends badly for the winner.

Rose wrote me a love letter, and that was a mistake. Otherwise maybe I would have just been able to ignore it all.

I couldn’t.

He made par on the first three holes, so Cal was having a good golf day, but playing with his dad was always a challenge.

The plans had been approved and permits for the hotel project were in the works. That was satisfying; everything was moving forward.

But it hadn’t gone smoothly.

There was the unexplained bloodstain, the unwanted squatters who had occupied the house, the book Ross had received anonymously about an old vendetta centered around the place, and the possible fallout of what appeared to be a relationship between his sister and his business partner and very good friend.

“Nice shot.” He watched as his father’s ball arced to a landing right on the green. At one time, his father had considered going pro. He’d opted for becoming a pharmacist instead, though he did play for his college. He was good at the game but was a conservative man by nature. A more structured career suited him better than taking the gamble. Still, he was really a scratch golfer.

As casually as possible, as Cal lined up to make his long shot, he asked, “Has Whitney mentioned she’s seeing Ross?”

“Is she?” His dad looked unsurprised. “Ross is a nice young man. Fine with me.”

The suspicion was that they were more than “seeing each other”, which was an old-fashioned phrase for dating anyway. Cal suspected, knowing Ross as well as he did, that they were already sleeping together. Ross had the ability to move fast to get what he wanted. “I’ve had the brotherly discussion with him.”

His father laughed. “Okay, I can skip the fatherly one, then. Is it that serious?”

He swung, and of course, the ball sailed to the left of the fairway. Cal shook his head, but at the game, not the question. “I don’t know. That’s the problem.”

“She’s level-headed.”

“I trust her.”

“Not him?”

He needed to get out of the weeds in more than one way. “She’s told me to mind my own business, so I will.”

“Well, then keep your word. You’re a lot like your mother. You want to take on the problems of the world, but that’s not a realistic goal. Right now, go find your ball and get it on the green.”

Easier said than done.

Both things.

“I’m not allowed to worry about my sister?”

“Of course you are, but don’t interfere. I left you alone a time or two when I thought you might be making a mistake, though I wanted to impart my wisdom. You worked it out. Leave it be.”

Ross was well aware he had his faults, but he hoped discourtesy wasn’t one of them. When Whitney’s alarm on her phone went off, he’d murmured, “You can have the shower first.
